7-day itinerary for Marrakech

A balanced outline between the medina, gardens and the great outdoors, to adjust to your wishes and the season.

Day 1

Gueliz, getting your bearings

Arrival at the apartment, right in the heart of Gueliz. A first easy-going day to find your feet: a stroll through the streets of Gueliz — galleries, cafés, shops — just steps from your door.

Day 2

The heart of the medina

Jemaa el-Fna square, the Koutoubia Mosque and its gardens, a wander through the souks, and Le Jardin Secret a little further into the medina. You'll get lost, and that is the charm of the medina.

Day 3

Majorelle Garden and heritage

Half a day at the Majorelle Garden and YSL Museum (booking online recommended).
Half a day of palaces and heritage: Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, El Badi Palace; for the more curious, Ben Youssef Madrasa and the tanneries quarter.

Day 4

Morning in Gueliz and its galleries — late afternoon in Hivernage and back through the medina

In the morning, relax at the apartment, then visit the art galleries nearby — the Galerie des Tanneurs just a stone's throw away, Birmeyer, and a few others along the streets of Gueliz. Head back for a tagine and a siesta, then sunbathe on the private terrace. In the late afternoon, make your way to the calm, chic Hivernage district, then walk back towards the medina past La Mamounia, the fabric quarter and the Royal Palace, all the way to Jemaa el-Fna square in its lively evening buzz, for dinner in this unique atmosphere — then walk back to Gueliz along Avenue Mohammed VI, a lovely stroll.

Day 5

Day trip, as you like

Ourika Valley and the Atlas Mountains — a day trip out of the city, among Berber villages and waterfalls, with transport usually arranged for the full day.
or
Agafay Desert and quad biking — sunset and dinner in a tent in the Agafay Desert.
or
Essaouira — a day of sea air in Essaouira on the Atlantic coast.

Day 6

A riad day pass in an authentic riad: a unique experience not to be missed

Behind a discreet door in the medina lies a traditional riad: an open-air patio, a fountain or pool, bejmat tiles, tadelakt plaster, olive or orange trees, and in some, a magnificent view of the Koutoubia Mosque from the rooftop terrace — an experience not to be missed. For a day or half a day, several riads open their spa à la carte: traditional hammam and black soap scrub, massage, heated jacuzzi, pool, rooftop jacuzzi overlooking the medina rooftops, Moroccan lunch or brunch, or an introduction to Moroccan cooking — everyone creates their own tailor-made moment, far from the bustle of the souks.

Day 7

Final moments

Last-minute shopping and haggling in the souks, a leisurely brunch, then off to the airport.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a week enough to visit Marrakech?

Yes, a week lets you make the most of the medina and the city's gardens and museums, while keeping 1 to 2 days for a day trip nearby (Ourika Valley, Agafay Desert or Essaouira).

Do you need to hire a car for a week in Marrakech?

Not necessarily — it all depends on where the apartment is. Well chosen, as in Gueliz, it lets you do everything on foot: no parking hassle, and distances stay short. Feeling tired? Just call a petit taxi. Day trips are usually booked with transport already included — unless you want to head off on your own, on the Ourika tracks or elsewhere, in which case you can hire a car for the day or take a grand taxi, at very affordable prices.

Is it better to book day trips in advance?

It is recommended for day trips (Ourika Valley, Agafay Desert), especially in high season, as well as for the Majorelle Garden, which requires online booking.
